"I particularly enjoyed the Coast-to-Coast section. What an amazing adventure!" Nicola
I've never been a bike-rider on a regular basis, but reading your book made me want to be one! I was prepared for a "small yawn" but found it just the opposite. It was VERY inspiring and funny, as well as informative. Judy H.
THESE ARE FROM FOLKS WHO HAVE PURCHASED THE BOOK AND FELT THE NEED TO COMMUNICATE DIRECTLY WITH ME.
I'm up to page 26 and am totally fascinated. There is not one sentence I wanted to skip. The details are beautifully done. I had no idea that one bicycle needed so much and, at the same time, so
little. It never occurred to me how a cyclist got up a mountain. Carmen B.
Got the book, Jerry, and we're both enjoying it. Nice work. You've covered a lot of miles, and the descriptions are excellent! Chuck G.
My favorite things about your book is that it is fun, light, informative, clear & easy to use - thank you. Jill J.
Put me on the advanced order list for the sequel. Karla W.
I have to say that I am thoroughly enjoying your book and can only think that no one should miss your presentations at our libraries. I'm thinking how wonderful it would be to see your presentation on a big screen. Victoria, Librarian
I just finished your book and loved it! Thanks for the fun and inspiration. Over the Christmas break you helped me accomplish a 2008 goal of mine to ride door to door from Austin to Houston. Dustin O.

What a wonderful book you put together. Thanks so much for writing this....
Cyclists declare this book a great deal. The narrative speaks to the devoted cyclist, outlining many adventures. The writer/cyclist let's the reader know the degree of difficulty, access roads, regional regulations, but more importantly Jerry takes you up close and personal to riding adventures.

Bicycling is a fun exciting hobby that can do wonders to get people in shape and save on gas money with rising fuel costs - among other benefits. "Bicycle Journeys with Jerry" follows author and serious cyclist Jerry Dusterhoff as he speaks on one of those other benefits - adventure, as he recounts his tales of cycling across the country, including once covering the entire nation in less than two months on bicycling (sic) alone. "Bicycle Journeys with Jerry: Recreational Cyclist Recounts Experiences from Vermont to the Pyrenees" is a deftly composed encouragement to anyone hoping to do more with their bicycle and is highly recommended to community library collections focusing on sports and bicycling.

CHALLENGING MILES WITH LOTS OF SMILES
It is always enjoyable to read a book written by someone who has found a way to happily and healthily lead their life. Jerry Dusterhoff discovered a love of cycling which initially consisted of commuting to work but eventually took him to touring by bike, making new friends and expanding his personal goals.
After many years as a commuter cyclist Jerry decided that a vacation should include a visit to Vermont and some of the best cycling roads in the US. With his wife Marilane handling some of the logistics, touring Vermont by bike turned out to be so enjoyable that Jerry began to look into some of the trips offered throughout the country by Adventure Cycling. This proved to be a super opportunity to meet fellow riders and as sometimes happens along the way, friendships are made that will change the future for all. Before he knew it rides with the gang became an annual event , his goal to cycle across the US a reality and a wonderful trip along some of the Tour De France routes a lifetime highlight.
BICYCLE JOURNEYS WITH JERRY is perfect for families, couples or anyone looking to venture into cycling tours. Although most cycling books of this type give the usual stats and places to stay, Jerry includes other tidbits that one might not be able to learn from cycling brochures or off the Internet. My personal favorite was learning the best spots for ice cream, a must after a long ride! Of course, you'll also learn that you initially may make mistakes in apparel or equipment, but probably not more then once. Your tour itinerary may exclude the occasional killer hill, but then you get the chance to see just how fast you can go down the other side. Most of all, if you have a good map and good friends you will never, ever, get lost, only temporarily misplaced.

Although it helps to be a world-class bike racer if you attempt the famous climbs on the Tour de France, many senior cyclists dream about tackling them. Jerry Dusterhoff, author of Bicycle Journeys with Jerry, says it is "our Call of the Tourmalet." Jerry, who describes himself as "Average Joe," went on one of Marty Jemison's trips to observe the Tour and ride some of its legendary hills.
"Phil Liggett might describe the pro mountain climbing specialists as 'dancing in their pedals' and I might have danced for twenty meters, but I used all of my standing muscles ascending Col du Soulour," writes Jerry, who was 63 at the time.
When the group came to the Col de Tourmalet in the Pyrenees, he confesses "I felt crappy. My glutes were stiff and felt weak, my quads were numb, my hamstrings tight. Did I even have any knees?" He surprised himself by making it to the top. How was the climb? "Brutal and ugly, and in the last 5 km I had a lot of photo ops stops."
Here's the amazing part: his lowest gear was 39 x 27. If you know gearing, you know that's hardly what a grandfather wants in the Pyrenees! Still, he's about to do L'Alpe d'Huez shortly -- at age 65 (presumably equipped with a lower gear.) You can order Jerry's entertaining book on Amazon and read about his latest adventures here.
